Trenchless pipe repair

In the past, repairing a damaged sewer line was invasive and extensive work. It required digging deep into the ground to diagnose the problem and repair it. Nowadays, there’s a much easier process to repair pipe damages. With the right trenchless pipe repair service, homeowners can keep their property in great condition while ensuring their plumbing is efficiently fixed.

Below, we discuss the differences between more traditional pipe repairs–also known as relining–and trenchless pipe bursting.

What is Relining?

While we’ve previously mentioned traditional open-top excavation and trenchless pipe bursting, we wanted to further clarify the differences between the two. Relining is essentially part of traditional excavation, which is also known as open-top excavation.

It’s a more invasive process that requires plumbing experts to use professional equipment to dig heavily along the trench above the damaged sewer line to make repairs. Rather than a full replacement, expert plumbers will insert an epoxy-coated liner through the broken pipe to fix the damage. The liner expands and mends and seals the damage–holes and cracks of the pipe.

What is Trenchless Pipe Bursting?

Trenchless pipe bursting is a particular type of sewer line repair that isn’t as invasive. It refrains from digging trenches in the ground and utilizes a sewer line camera to survey the pipe to determine the damage and what caused it.

Once this has been determined, the existing pipe is replaced with a pneumatic hammer, or static pulling head, which breaks up the pipe and shifts it up toward the surface, and the new pipe replaces it.

Relining & Bursting: Which Should You Choose?

While the decision mostly depends on your particular situation, allow our team to help you determine what is best for you. Our team will usually recommend trenchless pipe bursting, as it offers major benefits:

  1. Maintains Property Appearance
Relining results in a messy property. However, trenchless pipe bursting only requires very minimal digging compared to relining to fix your pipe. This will keep your property intact, preventing property damage.
  2. More Savings
Relining requires a more thorough excavation, taking more time and driving up the pipe repair service cost. Many homeowners often find themselves spending an additional cost on yard restoration. Trenchless pipe bursting limits the amount of yard restoration that takes place as well as reduces the overall time needed to repair the damaged pipe.
